Pushmowers

Due to the poor performance of modern pushmowers, we have a huge demand for our proper pushmowers, examples of British engineering at its best from a time when the vast majority of people used pushmowers, demanded performance and recognised quality when they saw it.. A classic example of this is the Ransomes Ajax, a mower that was in production for nearly 40 years and Ransomes, along with Webb, JP and Qualcast, cut the majority of the nation's lawns for many decades.

Ransomes Ajax

The Ajax was one of the most popular hand mowers ever made and was manufactured by Ransomes, Sims and Jeffries of Ipswich, the first producers of push mowers in the 1830s; it was introduced in 1933 and remained in production until 1972. During this time the Ajax was produced in five different versions, each being a small progression on its predecessor, and over 250,000 were sold. The Mark I and Mark II Ajax was produced during the 1930s. The remaining three marks were produced in the period after the Second World War. A distinctive feature of the Ajax is that it has cast aluminium alloy sides giving it easy manoeuvrability. The one in the picture is a Mk.5 and dates from the 1960s.

Webb Witch

H.C. Webb were a traditional engineering company who producing lawnmowers at their Birmingham works from the 1920's until the 1980's when they were absorbed into the Qualcast Group. The 8-bladed Webb Witch is traditionally made push mower with ribbed split rear-rollers and gives a very fine cut, with little effort to the user.

JP Maxees

The JP Maxees is a design classic from the 1950/60s. The mower was made by a company formed by two engineers named Jerram and Pearson (hence the name) in Leicester. The company prided itself on the quality of its design and engineering and JP mowers were known as the 'Rolls Royce of Lawnmowers'. In fact, the two companies did have links through other engineering interests. The mower in the photo is a Mark 3 JP Maxees, dating from the 1960s, and is in very good condition.

Small Motor Mowers

Light Atco 14

A classic small lawnmower of its era, built by Atco in the early/mid 1950s to a lightweight aluminium and steel design and powered by a 79cc Villiers, 2-stroke engine with a kick-start. It has a 14 inch cut and the usual manoeuvrability and cutting benefits of a small mower. A favourite with collectors.

Webb 14

The AB-series of lawnmowers were manufactured in the early 1980s and were some of the best small mowers made. Webb maintained a very high standard of build quality and therefore these mowers have lovely strong cutting cylinders and are robust and well constructed . The Webb 14" uses a 2HP Briggs and Stratton engine which is very powerful for the size of mower and is capable of cutting through thick grass.

Medium Motor Mowers

Light Atco 17

A classic lawnmower of its era, built by Atco in the early/mid 1950s to a lightweight aluminium and steel design and powered by a 79cc Villiers, 2-stroke engine with a kick-start. This mower has a 17 inch cut and is a favourite with collectors.

Ransomes Marquis

One of the finest mowers that the Old Lawnmower Company can offer is the Ransomes Marquis. The Marquis is powerful and exceptionally well engineered, achieving a superb quality of cut and rolled stripes (due to Ransomes hallmark heavy iron rear-rollers).

The Old Lawnmower Company can offer the Marquis in 18 inch and 20 inch cuts, with the excellent BSA F12 ‘Sloper’ engine from the 1960s, or the newer Briggs & Stratton 3HP from the 1970s.

Large Motor Mowers

Webb 24 (belt driven)

The Webb 24" belt driven lawnmower was one of the most successful large mowers from the 1960s until the early 1980s. Its short 'wheelbase' gave it excellent manoeuvrability and the ribbed, rubber-covered rear rollers very good traction. Originally sold with a Villiers engine, by the late 1970s when this model was made it was supplied with a Briggs and Stratton 5HP unit.

Webb 24 (chain driven)

The Webb 24 chain driven lawnmower, the AB1480, was the last version of this classic mower and considered by many to be the best. As well as having all the excellent features of the previous model, including the 5HP Briggs and Stratton engine, it also had strong chain transmission with clutch plates driving an uprated, heavy duty cylinder. It was made from 1984 to 1987 and was a sad loss when discontinued by Atco who by then owned Webb.

Roughcut Mowers

Ransomes Reelcutter

For controlling uneven areas of grass that become overgrown, the Reelcutter is very useful tool. Its 30 inch, heavy duty 4-blade cutting cylinder will chop up grass and weeds alike, so avoiding a ‘carpet’ of vegetation. The 250cc MAG engine ensures that the Reelcutter is powerful enough to take on demanding work but the design is more refined than other powered scythes.
